Skyhawks Soar in Home Opener Against Eastern Illinois

Updated: Apr 6, 2021

After over 400 days, the UT Martin football team took the field at Hardy Graham Stadium, and they didn't disappoint the home crowd. The Skyhawks tacked on 21 first-half points via the arm of Redshirt Sophmore quarterback John Bachus, and the athletic ability of linebacker John Ford who returned an interception for a touchdown.

Senior tight-end Rodney Williams had a career day by bringing down eight receptions for 95 yards and two touchdowns. On the opposite side of the football, UT Martin was popping pads with 10.5 tackles for a loss on the evening. The secondary duo of Devin Sims and Jaquez Akins notched five total pass breakups, and for the second straight week, the UT Martin defense has held their opponent to just two scores.

For Eastern Illinois, their issues stemmed from their lack of offensive rhythm. Panther quarterback Harry Woodbery threw for 279 yards while completing just over 50% of his passes. The EIU ground game was also hampered by the Skyhawk defense with both running backs combining for a modest 53 yards.

Next week UT Martin will have their hands full when they welcome in the #10 Jacksonville State Gamecocks. JSU Head Coach John Grass will put his team's five-game winning streak on the line when they make the five-hour and 45-minute drive to Hardy Graham Stadium on March 14th. Eastern Illinois will be in action next Sunday when the Panthers travel to the Music City to try to tame the winless Tennessee State Tigers.
