The UT Martin Men's Basketball hosted the top 2 teams in the OVC over the weekend. The Skyhawks were seeking their second conference win of the season as they hosted Murray State and Austin Peay.
In Thursday evening's matchup with Murray State, the Skyhawks struggled to shoot the ball, especially from the 3 point line. The offensive struggles led to an early halftime deficit, and the Skyhawks could never close the gap leading to an 84-62 home loss. Derek Hawthorne Jr. led the team with 15 points and 7 rebounds on the night.
Saturday evening's contest against Austin Peay saw a similar first-half result to the Murray State game, as the Governors jumped out to a 19 point halftime lead. However, hot shooting in the 2nd half for UT Martin saw the Skyhawks cut a 24 point deficit down to just 9 late in the game, but solid free throw shooting by Austin Peay helped the Governors hold off the late comeback attempt. Hawthorne once again led the Skyhawks with 25 points and 5 rebounds.
The Skyhawks are now looking for answers as they sit on a 3 game losing skid, and a 1-5 start to conference play. The team will look to rebound as they hit the road for a 4 game road swing starting at Eastern Illinois on Thursday.
